Texas Holdem Poker Strategy

The key is to always play smart with a strategy right from the hole cards.
Don't hold low quality hands, because you are not always going to flop the nuts..

Most poker strategy authors recommend a tight-aggressive approach to playing Texas hold 'em. This poker strategy involves playing relatively few hands (tight), but betting and raising often with those that one does play (aggressive). Although this poker strategy is often recommended, some professional poker players successfully employ other poker strategies as well. In his book Super/System, poker legend Doyle Brunson described his style of play as slightly looser than the usual pro. Ultimately, Brunson stressed aggression as being the basis of proper texas holdem strategy.

Almost all authors agree that position is an important element of Texas Holdem strategy, particularly in no-limit hold'em. Players who act later have more information than players who act earlier. As a result, poker players typically play fewer poker hands from early positions than later positions. In a ring game early position are the people who are after the small blind and the later positions are the people closest to the button. After the flop the small blind is in the earliest position.

One attempt to develop a quantitative model of the game as an isolated complex system has had some success, although the full consequences for optimal poker strategies remain to be explored. However, as a basic concept, consider the certainty equivalent of a gamble. The more risk-averse a person is, the more he will be prepared to pay to eliminate risk, for example accepting $1 instead of a 50% chance of $3, even though the expected value of the latter is more. People may be risk-averse or risk-loving depending on the amounts involved and on whether the gamble relates to becoming better off or worse off; this is a possible explanation for why the same person may buy both an insurance policy and a lottery ticket.

Proper poker strategy in poker tournaments can vary widely depending in the amount of chips one has, the stage of the tournament, the amount of chips others have, and the playing styles of one's opponents. Although some authors still recommend a tight playing style, some poker authors recommend looser play (playing more hands) in tournaments than one would otherwise play in cash games. This is because the blinds and antes increase very rapidly towards the end of the tournament, forcing players to play hands that they would not normally play when the blinds were small. This creates more aggressive and loose play, however this also takes some skill out of the game, as there are less moves that can be employed.

Also consider the probability of the poker hand. The hands are ranked in the order they are because of the relative probabilities of their being dealt, with rarer hands ranking above more common hands. All five-card poker hands can be collapsed down to 7,462 distinct equivalence classes. For example, there are 24 different ways to create an aces over kings full house hand, but since they all hold the same poker ranking value, they can be collapsed into the same equivalence class. In this way, all 2,598,960 unique five card poker hands can be shrunk down to just 7,462 distinct classes of hands.
